You can achieve a lighter Thanksgiving meal that satisfies without using artificial sweeteners and without sacrificing your favorites.

Cooking sugar-free at Thanksgiving might seem more difficult than cooking sugar-free from day-to-day. Classic Thanksgiving dishes are hearty, rich, and flavorful, but they often use canned ingredients and added sugar to create those flavors and textures.

If your goal is to cook sugar-free while staying true to the traditional Thanksgiving feast, switch your focus to simply avoid added, refined sugar rather than stressing about naturally occurring sugar. You can achieve a lighter Thanksgiving meal that satisfies without using artificial sweeteners and without sacrificing your favorites. Here, a few tips to get you started:

Eating healthy should still be delicious.

Low-Sugar Thanksgiving Main Courses

  • Avoid brines with sugar. Many turkey and ham recipes include a sugary brine. Avoid those that call for maple syrups, brown sugar, canned fruit, orange juice, or cola, and go instead for a recipe that uses herbs and lemon juice. This is an easy place to cut sugar that won’t affect a classic Thanksgiving dish.
  • Give the traditional sweet potato casserole a makeover. This dish has its own bullet point because it is the biggest contributor to sugar intake during Thanksgiving meals for many families. With candied pecans and marshmallows, it can have more sugar than dessert. Choose from a variety of our lighter, lower-sugar sweet potato pie variations. Or do a simple mashed sweet potato with a bit of browned butter and fresh orange juice for an impossibly easy sweet potato side.

Skip the cranberry sauce. This goes for homemade and canned sauce. Cranberries are naturally very bitter, so many recipes call for lots of added sugar. Try a fruit-topping recipe that uses a more naturally sweet fruit and requires less added sugar. There are variations that incorporate other flavors and use maple syrup rather than refined sugar, such as our Roasted Cranberries and Grapes with Rosemary.

Dairy-Free Thanksgiving Desserts

If you're watching your sugar, desserts are a sugar trap. These tips will help you enjoy a slice of pie without overdoing your sugar intake.

Make the majority natural sugar. Now that you’ve saved your sugar intake for dessert, just aim for no added sugar. There is naturally occurring sugar in milk and in fruit that make delicious desserts. Try our lighter but decadent Thanksgiving desserts. Honey, agave, and maple syrup can be utilized in recipes instead of white sugar typically on a 1-for-1 basis if you're not baking.

Instead of going zero-sugar or using sugar substitutes, opt for a lower-sugar Thanksgiving menu. The ideal way to achieve this is to limit unnecessary added sugars in your Thanksgiving mains and sides. Then, you've earned the right to have a sweet treat at dessert. Just try to make sure you're eating as much naturally occuring sugar instead of added sugar. With these tips, you can keep your sugar intake low even on the biggest food holiday of the year.

Sugar-free Low Carb Pumpkin Pie (No-bake)

We’re looking forward to our annual visit from my wonderful MIL. She visits every year for either Thanksgiving or Christmas.

My kids are very excited because Grandmommy has infinite patience and knows just how to make everyone feel special (like all grandparents do – they just have the knack). My son is already setting aside the board games they will play, as my daughter thinks about what crafts they will do together – Grandmommy always has the best ideas. Because our extended families live in Texas and the East coast we cherish these brief visits during the holiday season.

Pumpkin pie is a favorite of mine and I eagerly anticipate making it every Fall. I love its firm, custardy texture and the mixture of spices that mingle with the pureed pumpkin – taking it to an entirely new level. Since I only make pumpkin pie twice a year, once for Thanksgiving and once for Christmas, I consider it a must for my holiday table.

I’ve been working on a baked sugar-free pumpkin pie with a more traditional-style pastry crust for the past several weeks. The pumpkin pie filling is slap-your-daddy good, but the low carb pie crust burns before the pie is fully cooked – even with crust savers. Because I don’t share anything I’m not immensely proud of, that version will have to wait until next year. Simply put, I want you to have the best recipes I can offer. Cooking and eating should each be a pleasurable experience.

I tabled the low carb baked pumpkin pie recipe and began researching no-bake pumpkin pie recipes. I found what I was looking for on All Recipes – a stovetop recipe for pumpkin pie filling that I fiddled with a bit. This is a very easy and popular recipe on the site and is rated 4 1/2 stars.

My version results in a pretty good no-bake low carb pumpkin pie. The texture is a little different than that of a traditional pumpkin pie, but it’s absolutely still worth making. My kids loved it.

What I like about this recipe is that you can use your favorite low carb pie crust. I used a “brown sugar” pecan pie crust that is particularly great with low carb no bake cheesecakes, but it would be equally good with a grain free almond pie crust or this ketogenic walnut pie crust.

This sugar-free pumpkin pie filling is nicely spiced and is cooked on the stovetop until thickened, much like a custard or pudding, and gelatin helps it set. Pour the cooked filling into your favorite pre-baked crust and chill. I prefer to chill mine uncovered, over-night, so it develops a very thin skin on top. Then, I cover the pie with plastic wrap. This step prevents the filling from sticking to the wrap when it’s uncovered and messing up the surface of the pie. I do this with all of my low carb “cream pies” and also with my Nana’s cheese pie, which is a family favorite.

We all know that pumpkin and winter squashes (as well as sweet potatoes) contain natural sugars, but I have not added any additional sugars. I used my favorite low carb sugar alternatives. I like Sukrin brand, but you can use your favorite.

The serving size for this pie is smaller than the healthy 8 servings suggested in several of my other low carb pie recipes. Taken in the context of the amount of food one may consume on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day, it is a nice size.

How To Make Cranberry Sauce Without Sugar

This sugar-free cranberry sauce recipe is ridiculously easy. It takes just ten minutes. In fact, it’s so easy that it almost feels strange to call it a recipe.

But, I know that at this time of year many people want to know how to make cranberry sauce with no sugar. If you haven’t made a whole berry cranberry sauce before, you’ll never want to go back to the canned stuff.

You’ll be happy to know that the process to make low carb cranberry sauce is actually the same as any other cranberry sauce from scratch. All you have to do is simmer together cranberries, water, sweetener, and orange zest. Then, stir in vanilla extract at the end.

The difference is in the sweetener. I prefer confectioner’s-style powdered erythritol as my sweetener of choice. It blends well into the sauce, keeps longer without crystallizing, has no aftertaste, and is a natural sweetener.

If you’ll be storing your sauce at all, I highly recommend the powdered version. That way, the sauce won’t become crunchy. How long does cranberry sauce last? I’d say at least a week in the fridge, as long as your sweetener is powdered or liquid.

If you plan to use your sugar-free cranberry sauce right away, regular granulated erythritol will work just fine, too. You can still use granulated if you think you’ll have leftovers, but the sauce will crystallize sooner in this case.

The recipe is actually very flexible in terms of sweetener, so feel free to use whatever you have. The fresh cranberries actually have a small amount of natural sugar, and this helps the sauce thicken. It will gel a little, just like you’d expect from a traditional cranberry sauce. No one will guess it’s a low sugar cranberry sauce, where the only sugars come from the cranberries.

Some so-called healthy cranberry sauce recipes add orange juice, but this actually adds a lot of sugar. And, it’s totally unnecessary to get that hint of orange flavor.

All you have to do is make your cranberry sauce with orange zest instead! Add as much or as little as you like, depending on how much you like orange. I might even try a little orange extract next time I make this sugar-free cranberry sauce.

If you want a paleo cranberry sauce, you might be okay with the powdered erythritol since it’s a natural sweetener. But if not, feel free to swap it with something else, like stevia, coconut sugar, or even maple syrup. The recipe is very forgiving in terms of which sweetener you want to use.

Gluten-Free Pecan Pie Ingredient Tips and Substitutions

Pecan pie filling is more forgiving than some people might think, but there are definitely some dos and don&rsquots to keep in mind.

Coconut Sugar and Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is the star of the show in this paleo pecan pie filling, but the coconut sugar does add some nice molasses undertones. If you need to substitute it, you can use another granulated sugar. However, other sugars tend to be sweeter and not as rich.

I don&rsquot recommend substituting the maple syrup because it adds amazing flavor. But if you must, you can substitute another liquid sweetener. Just keep the flavor of the sweetener in mind. Molasses, for example, might be too strong, while agave nectar will have a very light taste. I don&rsquot recommend using brown rice syrup, because it has a mild bitterness that some people might notice.

Vegan Butter

I use Earth Balance &ndash they have a soy-free, corn-free version available. You can substitute coconut oil, but it will have a slight influence on the flavor, and the dairy-free pecan pie filling won&rsquot set up as well at room temperature. You might need to refrigerate the pie to help it fully set.

I don&rsquot recommend trying to make this recipe egg-free. The filling is completely flour- and starch-free, which means the eggs provide all of the structure. If you need an egg-free, vegan pecan pie treat, try my Gluten-Free Pecan Pie Cookies or my Paleo Pecan Pie Bars. Both recipes are grain-free, gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and vegan.

Pecans

You might have noticed that I specified &ldquoraw&rdquo pecan halves. Please do NOT toast the raw pecans prior to assembling this gluten-free pecan pie. The top layer of pecans will burn while baking if they are toasted beforehand.

The light, crisp bite, rich flavor, and mild sweetness of pecans make them a natural for pie. But don&rsquot hesitate to swap in some other nuts, or a combination of compatible nuts, if you&rsquore feeling adventurous. Just keep the taste of the nut in mind. Walnuts, cashews, and even peanuts (if tolerated), are sometimes used in pies like this.

How to Cook a Sugar-Free Thanksgiving - Recipes

Update: This is a cane sugar-free sauce. It still needs quite a bit of sweetener to make it palatable and not overly tart. The sauce is still not very sweet even with this amount. There are infinite ways to make cranberry sauce. Some suggestions include adding diced pears or apples, increasing the orange juice and decreasing the sweetener, or using coconut sugar. Please read the comments below for all of the suggestions. Be creative here and try what works for you. If you come up with something great then leave your recipe in the comments section below. This sauce looks easy and delicious! Can't wait to try it.

Ali,
This looks yummy. I'm having such a problem with citrus, though and am trying to figure out how to do cranberry sauce without adding any. I wondered if you would have any suggestions? Do you think I could just leave it out and adjust the sweetener?

I made your hemp bread (heavily modified with almond meal/sorghum in place of the hemp and sweet rice flour because I can't find hemp flour locally). It was lovely! And I used it in a recipe I am modifying from barefoot contessa for thanksgiving fig stuffing. It was a beautiful addition to the recipe! Thank you!

One final thing: my friend and I used your instructions for canning last night, and made 7 pints of apple/pear sauce. Lovely! Thanks for the step by steps!

I so adore your blog. Thank you so very much for everything you post!!

I am so interested in making the Hemp Bread you posted a week or so ago. I live in Mechanicsburg PA and cannot find the Hemp Flour anywhere. Would you suggest using another flour in its place or let me know where I could possibly find some? I am not gluten intolerant. It does not have to be a gluten free product. And are all the recipes you post,in the cookbook you advertise on your blog? Thanks so much. I love the recipes you post. I'm on my way to a healthier way of living and eating.
Theresa

More folks would probably like cranberry sauce if they had it your way. I always love your healthy take on things. I'm nowhere near sugar free, but you always inspire me, Ali.

The cranberry sauce can also be made with chopped pears or apples in place of citrus and sugar. They lend the sweetness it needs (and your substitution recommendatio of apple juice supports the "complementary flavor" and the extra flavor dimension that cranberries take on when combined with other fruits to tone them down a bit. Just stew them all together - I used equal amounts of pears, apples or a combination

Wow, love cranberries but don't like all the sugar that often goes along with them. I am excited about trying this with maple! Does the maple flavor come through much?

I was thinking of doing something similar using a simple syrup of coconut sugar and water. I wonder.

I love following your blog. You're awesome :-)

My Year Without - Thanks, Enjoy!

Jennifer M. - Thanks, so glad to hear you are having fun with the recipes! :) To make the cranberry sauce citrus-free, try replacing the orange juice with apple cider and add about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to replace the orange zest. You could also add diced apples to the sauce. Your Thanksgiving fig stuffing sounds lovely! :)

Theresa Cain - You can try replacing the hemp flour with almond meal. To create my hemp bread I used a recipe of mine that uses almond meal and different gluten-free flours. You may need to reduce the water. Enjoy! As far as the recipes on this blog, I only have a few, maybe 3, posted that are in the book, the rest of them are new.

Shirley - Thanks, I wonder if this recipe would be good with your bee's honey? :)

Anon - I appreciate the suggestions you offered here for another version of a citrus-free sauce. I am going to try pears next time, that sounds wonderful! Thanks! :)

Jenn - Yes, the maple flavor does come through. I use grade B maple syrup which has a strong flavor. You could try Grade A instead. If you don't want the maple flavor at all then using agave nectar would be a better choice. Also, if you use agave, the cranberry and orange flavors shine through more clearly.

Kelly - Hmm, I bet coconut sugar and water would be yummy! Can't wait to see your recipe and post! I bet it will be great! :)

Looks delicious! I love cranberries! Do you have a pizza crust recipe? I just love all your baked goods and I was thinking if you have one I am sure lots would love to see it!!

Hmmm, I have to take issue with you on this one. First, the recipe sounds delicious. And while technically it is 'sugar'-free as we know it, that is quite a bit of sweetener (a.k.a. a better form of sugar.) I love pure maple syrup and use it as my liquid sweetener when I don't use date sugar. I know cranberries require a bit more added sweetness than most fruits. I was just surprised when I saw the amount, when I was expecting the orange juice to take that role.

That looks great Ali! I think I'll give it a try.

Linda - Thanks, you must be a mind reader or something! I do have a pizza crust which I created last year that I was thinking of posting. but over the weekend I came up with another one. A super thin crispy crust, yeast-free, vegan, and only a few ingredients (and no xanthan gum). I will probably post it this week sometime. :)

Karen - Well, I was actually waiting for someone to say something about this! :) I never use that much sweetener either. When I created this recipe I started with 1 cup of cranberries and 4 tablespoons of sweetener. Then I added 2 more tablespoons because it was so tart! 6 tablespoons doesn't sound like much does it? When I made the recipe again and multiplied it by 4 to get a normal amount one would serve at a large gathering (and to take the photos here) the total amount was 1.5 cups which sounded then like way too much! But adding less resulted in a very tart sauce. I am going to update the post with everyone's suggestions here as soon as I have time. I know most people don't read the comments section. You could up the o.j. and lessen the sweetener if you like or add diced pears or apples and apple juice concentrate. There are so many ways to go. I hope folks experiment to create something that works for them. Thanks for mentioning this! If you come up with another cranberry sauce recipe and post to your blog, I'll link it up here. :)

Thanks Linda, looks like your comment came through while I was typing up my other response. Enjoy! :)

That colour! Absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention the flavours - perfect combination!

Why make a sugar free cranberry sauce?

I originally created this no sugar cranberry sauce, because I wanted to cut back on sugar and calories during the holidays.

I know cranberries are tart, but when I came across a recipe where you made a simple sugar syrup before adding the cranberries, I had enough.

Too. Much. Flippin’. Sugar. There had to be a better way!

So, I decided to try out my two favorite natural, no calorie sweeteners in my homemade recipe.

The easiest way to do it was to make two batches of this sugar free recipe – one with Swerve Sweetener and one with powdered monk fruit sweetener.

Both sweeteners are perfect for low carb, keto diets. They're also gluten free.

We always use a great deal of cranberry sauce, especially for Thanksgiving leftovers like Spicy Cranberry Hummus and Turkey Cranberry Crescent Braid. So making such a big amount of this easy to make sauce wasn’t a big deal.

Plus, I wanted to see if there was a difference in taste, so I could share the results with you all.

Drinking Sugar-Free Has Never Been Sweeter

MiraBurst miracle berry tablets, which are extracted from miracle berry fruit, can help you alter the flavor of sour and acidic foods and drinks and make them taste sweet.

This is because miracle berries contain miraculin, a natural protein that binds your taste buds and changes your perception of taste. This is only temporary, as the effects of the fruit last about 60 minutes.

Our easy-melt tablets are completely natural and don’t contain any sugar, sweeteners, or chemical preservatives. They do contain antioxidants, vitamin C, and polyphenols, which help control blood sugar levels.

These tablets are the perfect substitute for sugar. We’ve compiled our top 5 delicious yet traditionally sugar-packed drinks and made them sugar free. To satisfy that pesky sweet tooth, be sure to consume a miracle berry tablet before drinking the beverage. Check out these healthy sugar-free homemade drink recipes and satisfy any sugar craving that comes your way!

Strawberry Limeade

This refreshing drink is a wonderful mixture of sweet and sour, and a perfectly healthy drink for both you and your kids.

Remember, if you drink it after eating a miracle berry or taking a miracle berry tablet, you won’t notice the sour taste of lime at all. The drink will be completely sweet, which is great if you don’t particularly like the sour taste.

• 1 ½ cups of fresh strawberries

• 1 cup of fresh lime juice

• Lime wedges for garnishing

Cut the strawberries into quarters and put them in a blender. Add lime juice and blend until completely smooth.

Pour the mixture into a pitcher, and add cold water and ice cubes. Pour into glasses and garnish the drinks with lime wedges. You can also garnish them with strawberries.

Old-Fashioned Lemonade

This is a classic drink that never goes out of style. There’s rarely anything as refreshing as good old lemonade, but most of us can’t really enjoy it without adding sugar.

Luckily, with miracle berry tablets, your lemonade will taste as sweet as candy.

• Lemon slices for garnishing

Squeeze the lemons to make fresh juice and pour it into a pitcher. Add water and ice, and throw in a few lemon slices to garnish the drink.

Southern Sweet Tea

This iced tea beverage is ideal for hot summer days, or when autumn starts knocking on your door. If you like drinking tea, you’ll absolutely love this drink.

Remember to take a miracle berry tablet about a minute before drinking the iced tea, so that it can taste just as if you added sugar.

Pour the boiled water into a large heat-resistant glass pitcher. Add a pinch of baking soda and the tea bags. Cover the pitcher and let the water steep for about 15 minutes.

Take the tea bags out and pour the cool water into the pitcher. Put the pitcher into a refrigerator to completely cool the drink. It should be cold and ready to serve in about 3 hours.

Pineapple Punch

Want to treat your family and friends with a delicious party punch for a special occasion? This pineapple punch is just what you need.

The best part about it is that you can play around with the ingredients. The key is to add pineapple, but you can replace everything else with anything you’d like.

• 46-ounce can of pineapple juice

• 2 packages of flavored drink mix

• Pineapple slices for garnishing

Pour the pineapple juice into a punchbowl. Add your preferred drink mix, such as sugar-free Kool-Aid, for instance. Stir the mixture well, and then pour in Sprite Zero. You can also use sugar-free ginger ale or any other carbonated beverage instead of Sprite.

Add ice and garnish the punch with pineapple slices.

Frozen Raspberry Lemonade

This delightful drink will keep you cool during those long, hot summer days. Just like the strawberry limeade, it’s a tasty mixture of sweet and sour, but you can turn the sour into sweet with miracle berries.

Squeeze the lemons to make fresh juice. Pour the juice into a blender. Add water and raspberries. Blend until completely smooth (it should take about 2 minutes). If you don’t want your drink to have raspberry seeds, you can simply strain the puree.

Add the ice to the blender and blend until the mixture is smooth. Pour into glasses and garnish with a few raspberries.
